Bhagavad Gita - Chapter 1, Verse 44 (1.44)
Sanskrit:
कुलक्षये प्रणश्यन्ति कुलधर्माः सनातनाः। धर्मे नष्टे कुलं कृत्स्नमधर्मोऽभिभवत्युत॥
Transliteration:
Kula-kṣhaye praṇaśhyanti kula-dharmāḥ sanātanāḥ, Dharme naṣhṭe kulaṁ kṛitsnam adharmaḥ abhibhavaty uta.
Translation:
“When the family is destroyed, the eternal family traditions are lost, and with the destruction of these traditions, the rest of the family becomes involved in irreligion.”
Bhagavad Gita - Chapter 1, Verse 45 (1.45)
Sanskrit:
अहो बत महत्पापं कर्तुं व्यवसिता वयम्। यद्राज्यसुखलोभेन हन्तुं स्वजनमुद्यताः॥
Transliteration:
Aho bata mahat-pāpaṁ kartuṁ vyavasitā vayam, Yad-rājya-sukha-lobhena hantuṁ sva-janam udyatāḥ.
Translation:
“Alas! How strange it is that we have resolved to commit such a great sin, driven by the desire for royal pleasure, and are prepared to kill our own kinsmen!”
Bhagavad Gita - Chapter 1, Verse 46 (1.46)
Sanskrit:
यदि मामप्रतीकारमशस्त्रं शस्त्रपाणयः। धार्तराष्ट्रा रणे हन्युस्तन्मे क्षेमतरं भवेत्॥
Transliteration:
Yadi mām apratīkāram aśhastraṁ śhastra-pāṇayaḥ, Dhārtarāṣhṭrā raṇe hanyus tan me kṣhemataraṁ bhavet.
Translation:
“It would be better for me if the sons of Dhritarashtra, armed with weapons, kill me unarmed and unresisting on the battlefield.”
Bhagavad Gita - Chapter 1, Verse 47 (1.47)
Sanskrit:
संजय उवाच। एवमुक्त्वार्जुनः सङ्ख्ये रथोपस्थ उपाविशत्। विसृज्य सशरं चापं शोकसंविग्नमानसः॥
Transliteration:
Sañjaya uvācha: Evam uktvā arjunaḥ saṅkhye rathopastha upāviśat, Visṛijya sa-śharaṁ chāpaṁ śhoka-saṁvigna-mānasaḥ.
Translation:
Sanjaya said: “Having spoken thus on the battlefield, Arjuna sat down on the seat of the chariot, casting aside his bow and arrows, his mind overwhelmed with sorrow.”
These verses conclude the first chapter, depicting Arjuna’s intense grief and emotional turmoil as he contemplates the destruction that the battle will bring
